Weddings Through the Seasons
Honestly, every season in Virginia wine country offers beauty. Each spring, there’s a renewed sense of fresh beginnings. Grapevines burst with potential as the valley comes to life. There’s a lazy, haziness that takes over in the summer months, until the grapes are harvested in August and September. There’s a collective gasp as the fall foliage reminds us to pause and reflect. Then, we ease into winter with shorter days and cozier nights by the fire.
Choosing the right time of year for your wedding can feel like a difficult decision. Not only will it set the tone for your guests, attire, and food, but everyone’s comfort is also important. Seasons in this neck of the woods can be challenging to pinpoint. For example, it’s not uncommon to have frost in May or a hurricane in October. But there are some perks to the unpredictability. For example, we’ve worn sweatshirts in late August and spent the afternoon outside on a sunny December day.
The Indigo House is situated at the base of the Appalachian Mountains, offering stunning sunrises and almost 360-degree mountain views in winter. Since we are lower in elevation, we get those early buds of green first and hold onto fall color longer than the mountaintops. Take a look at the Indigo House and the surrounding areas through the seasons to inspire your wedding.

Winter Weddings
December, January, February, March
Because the leaves have fallen by Thanksgiving, “stick season” runs from December into April, but there are still some warmish days. We experience freezing temperatures unpredictably all winter long, but it seems January-March are more likely to bring snow, sleet, or an afternoon of flurries.
Our favorite part: To sit in a heated reception tent (with clear side walls so you can still see the beauty of nature), surrounded by candles, is the epitome of romance.

Spring Weddings
April, May, June
It starts to look and feel like spring come mid-April, with true, luscious greenery in May (which is our rainiest month). Wake up to misty mornings, warming temps throughout the day, and moderate evenings. Spring showers can be intense but brief, leaving you with breathtaking sunsets. Up in the mountains, the mountain laurel and rhododendron are blooming.
Our favorite part: Spring at the Indigo House is gorgeous (Stephanie loves it more than fall), and it typically hasn’t gotten too buggy outside yet.

Summer Weddings
July, August
When you think of summer, think bounty! Thankfully, it doesn’t really feel like summer here until mid-July. That’s when you can expect long, warm days with varying amounts of humidity, evening fireflies, and hazy sunrises. Come September, we’re known to hit highs in the 80s, but often, the nights cool down to sweatshirt weather.
Our favorite part: Local flower farms have the best selection this time of year, even at the farmer’s market!

Fall Weddings
September, October, November
Our most popular season is for good reason. Temps start to cool down mid-September and stay comfortable through October’s leaf changing. Hurricane season runs through the end of November, so it’s possible to get rain, a cold snap, or a few days of unpredictable weather. There’s also plenty of local events to entertain your guests.
Our favorite part: Pending storms, our property has gorgeous color through mid-November.
